Schools and Education

The two school districts that handle the largest percentage of Amarillo children are the Amarillo Independent School District and the Canyon Independent School District. Amarillo has approximately 30,000 students while Canyon nearly 10,000 students.

The higher education institutions in the city are Amarillo College, a two-year community college with more than 10,000 students; Wayland Baptist University, a private university based in Plainview, which has a branch in Amarillo; and Texas Tech University at Amarillo, a branch campus of Texas Tech University that offers selected master's degree programs. West Texas A&M University in nearby Canyon, Texas is the regional university in the Amarillo area.

As of 2000, 79 percent of Amarillo residents age 18 and over had graduated from high school, and 20 percent had college degrees.

Students in Amarillo's public schools consistently score higher than both the state and national averages on the SAT.

Amarillo College is the region's primary provider of workforce training and serves area business and industry by developing programs to meet their specific needs.
